"I'm very excited and honored to be a part of the Richmond Flying Squirrels' day game on Saturday, July 23rd, at 1:05" said Taylor. "I look forward to meeting the loyal Flying Squirrels fans and look forward to welcoming all the Virginia Tech fans in the area."
Taylor completed a stellar four-year career with the Hokies this past fall, finishing as the school's winningest quarterback as well as the all-time career leader in total offense, passing yards, rushing yards by a quarterback, and rushing touchdowns by a quarterback in addition to setting the single-season mark for most touchdown passes. In 50 career games, including 42 starts, the Hampton, Va., native completed 57.2 percent of his passes (495-for-865) while throwing for 7,017 yards and 44 touchdowns. He also rushed for 2,196 yards and scored 23 touchdowns on the ground.
During his senior season in 2010, Taylor completed nearly 60 percent of his passes for 2,743 yards while throwing for 24 touchdowns and just five interceptions. He also rushed for 659 yards and five touchdowns. The 21-year-old helped to lead Virginia Tech to an Atlantic Coast Conference title and an appearance in the Orange Bowl. For his efforts, Taylor was named the ACC Player of the Year in addition to being tabbed as the conference's Offensive Player of the Year and being named the first-team All-ACC quarterback. He was selected by the Baltimore Ravens in the sixth round of the 2011 NFL Draft this past April.
"We're really fired up to have Tyrod be a part of our day game on Saturday, July 23rd," said Flying Squirrels Vice President and COO Todd "Parney" Parnell. "There are a lot of Virginia Tech fans in the Richmond area, and we think this will be an opportunity for them to celebrate one of the most successful Hokies in the school's history. I really urge all Hokie fans to take advantage of our special $5 Diamond Club ticket offer in honor of Tyrod."
Taylor will throw out a ceremonial first-pitch and will be available to sign autographs and meet fans during the game. In addition to Taylor's appearance and the $5 Diamond Club ticket offer, the Flying Squirrels will sell hot dogs for just $1 during the game.
"Even though this game wasn't originally scheduled and was forced on us by all of the rain we've experienced, we looked at it as an opportunity to do something special for our fans. Our goal for this game - as it is for every game - is to give our fans as much value as possible while making memories in the process," added Parnell.
Game Two of the doubleheader is scheduled for 6:35 PM on Saturday, July 23rd. The Flying Squirrels will be celebrating Harry Potter Night and the first 2,500 fans ages 15 and up will receive a Nutzy "Fight in Flight" Acrylic Mug presented by Diet Coke and 98.9 Liberty.
The $5 Diamond Club ticket offer will be available through Friday, July 22nd at Noon. Tickets must be purchased in person at the Flying Squirrels Ticket Office at The Diamond or by phone at (804) 359-FUNN and are available while supplies last.
