Isotopes Power To First Win, 5-2
04/06/2012 11:15 PM ET
OMAHA, Neb. - It came a day later than they may have hoped, but the Albuquerque Isotopes (1-1) got their first win of the 2012 season thanks to a seventh-inning, four-run uprising that featured a pair of home runs and propelled the 'Topes to a 5-2 triumph over the Omaha Storm Chasers (1-1) on a blustery Friday night at Werner Park.

Locked in a scoreless draw, the Chasers drew first blood in the bottom of the fifth when Tony Abreu lined a solo home run to left and added to their advantage in the sixth on a two-out RBI double by Kevin Kouzmanoff that increased the lead to 2-0. Abreu, a former Isotope, came a double away from the cycle, collecting three of the Storm Chasers seven hits on the night.

Albuquerque's potent lineup wouldn't be stymied for long, however, and the 'Topes responded in the seventh with four runs to seize control of the contest. Scott Van Slyke put the Isotopes on the board by blasting a solo homer to left that trimmed the lead to 2-1. The big-fly was Van Slyke's second of the year in just two games. Trent Oeltjen immediately followed with a double in front of Josh Fields, who roped a double to center that chased home Oeltjen with the tying run. That set up Tim Federowicz, who crushed a two-run homer into the bleachers in left field that gave Albuquerque its first lead of the game at 4-2.

The hit parade would continue in the eighth thanks to a one out walk to Jeff Baisley, who advanced to second on a base hit by Van Slyke and promptly scored on a two-out single to right by Fields that gave the 'Topes a 5-2 edge.

Two innings of offense was more than enough for Albuquerque's pitching, which was excellent all evening. Starter Michael Antonini set the tone with five excellent innings in which he allowed a run on four hits while walking none and striking out two before handing off to reliever Will Savage (1-0), who worked two more frames, giving up a run on three hits en route to his first win of the season. Lefty Wil Ledezma authored a scoreless eighth and Scott Rice (1) delivered a one-two-three ninth to secure the victory as well as his first save of the campaign.

The Isotopes will look for their first winning streak of 2012 with right-hander Stephen Fife (No Record) getting the ball for the against Storm Chasers righty Nate Adcock (No Record) in a 6:05 PM MT start from Werner Park.

After a series in Omaha and another in Iowa, Albuquerque returns home on Friday, April 13 for an action-packed home opening homestand. On Friday, the first 3,000 fans will get an Isotopes scarf courtesy of Sandia Resort and on Saturday, 'Topes beanie caps will be handed out to the first 3,000 fans courtesy of Coca-Cola. Dodgers Hall of Fame Manager Tommy Lasorda is also scheduled to join in on Friday's Opening Night festivities.
