LHP Jake Diekman struck out the side in the ninth inning to earn the save
Scott Elarton tossed five scoreless innings and Domonic Brown delivered another clutch base hit as the IronPigs shutout the Pawtucket Red Sox, 1-0, on Monday night from McCoy Stadium in Rhode Island.

Elarton, who has been out of baseball for the last three seasons except for a 16-game stint with the Charlotte Knights in 2010, allowed just two hits and struck out four over his 85-pitch, five-inning outing.

In fact, the 36-year-old hadn't made a start since July 24, 2007 when he was a member of the Kansas City Royals.

Elarton, a former first-round pick of the Houston Astros in 1994, worked perfect first, second and fourth innings but had to work out of binds in the third and fifth frames.

In the third inning, Elarton struck out Paw Sox shortstop Jose Iglesias to escape a second and third, two-out jam.

Elarton worked himself into and out of trouble in the fifth inning. With two outs, the veteran right-hander walked two consecutive hitters to load the bases. After a visit from pitching coach Rod Nichols, Elarton finished his night by again striking out Iglesias on three pitches to end the threat.

Domonic Brown's RBI single in the fourth inning followed a Hector Luna bloop double and supplied the only offense the 'Pigs would need on Monday. Brown also delivered the game winning hit in Saturday's game two victory for Lehigh Valley.

The IronPigs bullpen finished off the second Lehigh Valley shutout in the first five games of the season. On Monday, it was Brian Sanches with two scoreless innings, Michael Schwimer with a clean eighth inning and Jake Diekman in the ninth that closed the door on the Paw Sox. Diekman struck out the side in the final frame to earn his first career Triple-A save.

The IronPigs (4-1) now have had four different relievers earn a save in their four wins this season.

Lehigh Valley's bullpen owns a 0.68 ERA (ER in 13.1 IP) in the first five games of the 2012 season.

The 'Pigs and Paw Sox will wrap up their four-game set from McCoy Stadium on Tuesday afternoon at 12:05 p.m. RHP Dave Bush will make his IronPigs season debut opposite Pawtucket RHP Ross Ohlendorf.

Tune into the Voice of the IronPigs, Matt Provence, on the IronPigs Radio Network, ESPN Radio 1230-1320 to catch all the action. The AT&T Pre-game show gets underway at 11:35 a.m.
