Dayton, Ohio-Jordan Smith lined an opposite field home run off the left field foul pole to break a 4-4 tie in the top of the 10th inning to lift the Lake County Captains to a 5-4 victory over the Dayton Dragons on Thursday night. A crowd of 8,230 saw the game at Fifth Third Field.
Smith's solo home run with one out in the 10th came after the Dragons had rallied to tie the game with two runs in the bottom of the ninth and send it on to extra innings.
Trailing 4-2 in the ninth, Steve Selsky singled to center field to start the comeback and Sean Buckley walked. Junior Arias was hit by an 0-2 pitch to load the bases, and Yovan Gonzalez followed with a single to left to drive in Selsky and make it 4-3. Jefry Sierra then hit a chopper to shortstop as Lake County tried to turn a game-ending double play. Gonzalez was out at second, but Sierra beat the throw to first on a very close play as the tying run scored to make it 4-4. With the winning run at third and two outs, Juan Perez grounded out to first and the game went to extra innings.
Smith's homer gave Lake County a 5-4 lead in the top of the 10th. In the bottom of the inning, Ryan Wright led off with an infield single and went to second on Miguel Cairo's sacrifice. Juan Silva reached on an infield single as Wright held at second, but Selsky grounded into a double play to end the game.
Lake County's Robel Garcia belted a two-run home run in the top of the eighth inning to break a 2-2 tie. The Dragons had led 2-1 after five innings, but Lake County's Alex Monsalve hit a solo homer in the sixth to tie the game.
Dragons starting pitcher Radhames Quezada worked the first six innings, allowing four hits and two runs (one earned) with two walks and one strikeout, but was not involved in the decision. Reliever James Allen worked the seventh and the eighth, allowing two runs on the Garcia homer. Kyle McMyne (2-2) pitched a scoreless ninth before allowing the tie-breaking homer in the 10th.
The Dragons finished with 10 hits. Silva was 3 for 5 with a run scored. Selsky was 2 for 5. Perez had the Dragons only extra base hit, a double in the fifth inning that set up a run.
Cairo, on a major league injury rehabilitation assignment, batted five times as the Dragons designated hitter. He was 0 for 4 with a sacrifice.
