Otis Brock III, a Savannah native who was the Savannah-Chatham County public school system's operations chief, died unexpectedly in his office on April 24th. Brock, 41, is survived by his wife, Nailah, two young children, Zoe and Zuri; Their third baby is on the way.
"While I did not have the privilege to know Mr. Brock personally, his impact on the schools in our district is both measurable and apparent," said John Katz, Sand Gnats president. "I have kids at May Howard, and our staff has worked closely with both Johnson High School and Shuman Elementary over the past three years. His legacy shall live on."
As operations chief, part of Brock's duties included overseeing construction projects funded by the education special purpose local option sales tax (ESPLOST), which in 2006 helped create $276 million in funding for 14 school improvement projects. The 2011 ESPLOST is anticipated to raise approximately $350 million for 18 construction projects, including nine new schools.
"It is through the dedication of people like Mr. Brock, the School Board, Dr. Lockamy, the faculty, staff and administrators in our schools that provide our children with the tools and opportunities to succeed," added Katz. "Were it not for their tireless efforts to improve educational opportunities and facilities, my boys would not be headed to Coastal Middle School in the Fall."
