PORTLAND, ME - The Eastern League is pleased to announce the winners of the Eastern League Player of the Week Award and Eastern League Pitcher of the Week Award for the period of May 21st through May 27th:
Reading Phillies outfielder Tyson Gillies has been selected as the Eastern
League Player of the Week for the period of May 21st-May 27th. The 23-year old
batted .500 (11-for-22) with three triples, one home run, six runs scored, five
RBI, three walks, one stolen base and a .909 slugging percentage in six games
for the R-Phils last week. Gillies, who is a native of Vancouver, British Columbia,
reached base and drove in or scored at least one run in all six games he played
in last week and had four multiple hit games, including going 2-for-3 with two
triples, two walks, two RBI and one run scored in Reading's 8-6 win at Erie
on Thursday. The 6'2", 205 lb. slugger led all Eastern League players in batting
average (.500), triples (3), on-base percentage (.560), slugging percentage
(.909) and OPS (1.469) last week. He also finished ranked among the weekly leaders
in hits (11-tied 2nd), total bases (20-3rd) and runs scored (6-tied 3rd). Tyson,
who is hitting .280 and has a league-high six triples in 42 games for the R-Phils
this season, was acquired by the Philadelphia Phillies with Phillippe Aumont
and J.C. Ramirez in a trade with the Seattle Mariners for Cliff Lee on December
16, 2009. He was originally selected by the Mariners in the 25th round of the
2006 draft out of Iowa Western Community College.

Chris Heston, a right-handed starting pitcher for the Richmond Flying Squirrels,
has been selected as the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for the period of
May 21st-May 27th. The 6'4", 185 lb. hurler started two games for the Flying
Squirrels last week and had a record of 2-0 with 20 strikeouts and a 0.64 ERA
in 14.0 innings pitched. In his first start of the week the Sanford, Florida
native struck out nine batters and did not issue a walk while surrendering just
one unearned run on six hits over eight innings of work to earn the win in Richmond's
3-1 victory at Bowie on Tuesday night. The 24-year old also earned the win in
his second appearance of the week on Sunday afternoon against the visiting Trenton
Thunder. He set a new career-high with 11 strikeouts and gave up one run on
six hits and four walks in six innings to lead the Flying Squirrels to a 5-2
win. Heston led all Eastern League pitchers in strikeouts (20) and innings pitched
(14.0) last week and ranked third in ERA (0.64). Chris, who has a record of
5-2 and currently leads the league in ERA (0.70) and strikeouts (59), was selected
by the San Francisco Giants in the 12th round of the 2009 draft after posting
a record of 7-0 with 88 strikeouts and a 4.17 ERA during his junior season at
East Carolina University.
