Phils' Hewitt enjoys two-day breakout

Breaking out of a slump can sometimes be a process, taking a number of games before a hitter finds his rhythm again, and other times it can take just a couple of days. For Anthony Hewitt, the latter seems to be true.

Hewitt homered twice and drove in four runs, a day after going 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs, as he led Class A Advanced Clearwater to a 10-7 win over Tampa on Thursday.

Philadelphia's No. 19 prospect's OPS stood at .734 on May 16, relatively close to his high-water number for the season of .760. He brought it back to that mark Thursday, with 84 points of the revival coming from just his last two days of production.

In two games, Hewitt raised his on-base percentage from .281 to .301 and his slugging percentage from .366 to .433. He also bumped up his average from .227 to .244. The eight RBIs from the two games represent more than he had in April (five) and more than half as many as he had in May (14).

The effort was Hewitt's first multi-homer game of the season, and his four RBIs in back-to-back games represent a season best.

The two-day outburst brought the 2008 first-round Draft pick's overall output more in line with the kind of production he's managed in the past. Last season with Class A Lakewood, Hewitt hit .240 with 14 home runs and a .405 slugging percentage in 119 games. He stole 36 bases, getting caught only five times.

On Thursday, Clearwater also received heavy production from third baseman Cody Asche, who went 5-for-5 with a double, two runs scored and two RBIs. Center fielder Zach Collier also plated two.

Chase Utley went 0-for-3 with two walks in a rehab appearance with the Threshers.
