Despite taking advantage of early mistakes from the Indianapolis starting pitcher, the Hens fell to the Indians at Victory Field on Thursday night, 10-5. Toledo starter, Andy Oliver, was credited with the loss after surrendering six earned runs in just four innings.
With the bases loaded in the top of the first, Indianapolis pitcher Rick VandenHurk walked newly acquired John Lindsey and hit Jerad Head with a wild pitch to score two. Ben Guez followed up with a RBI single to give Toledo the early 3-0 lead.
The Indians battled back in the bottom of the inning to tie the game, the rally was capped off with a Jeff Clement RBI double.
The pitchers continued to struggle and the offense from both teams took advantage. The Hens took a two-run lead in the top of the fourth with a triple from Cale Iorg. However the Indians once again responded right away.
Starling Marte sent an Oliver pitch deep to left field for a three run homer for the first of his five RBI on the night. The one run lead was enough for the Indianapolis bullpen but a Marte double and a pair of RBI singles clinched the win for Indy.
The Hens and Indians go at it again on Friday night with first pitch scheduled for 7:15 p.m.
