ABERDEEN, MD - The IronBirds surpassed five franchise records in their win over the Yankees 21-7. Most hits in a game (20), most runs in an inning (11), most runs scored in a game (21), total runs scored in a game (28), and attendance at Ripken Stadium (6,904) were each the highest in Birds' history.
Staten Island started the game early in the first inning last night when LF Taylor Dugas scored off of a fly ball hit by 1B Matt Snyder.
IronBirds fought back in the bottom of the first inning when LF Ronnie Welty homered to right field in the bottom of the first inning bringing CF Roderick Bernadina to home plate and giving the IronBirds the lead with a score of 2-1.
The Yankees came back swinging in the top of the third inning. DH Kuo doubled, allowing Snyder and CF Ravel Santana to score.
IronBirds SS Anthony Caronia scored off of a Bernadina single in the bottom of the third inning, tying the game at 3-3.
LF Anthony Vega broke the tie for IronBirds in the bottom of the fourth inning receiving his first home run of the season and sending home 1B Doug Bream and Caronia. IronBirds grabbed a 6-3 lead.
IronBirds added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, Welty scored off of a 3B Torsten Boss grounder and Boss scored off of a sacrifice fly from C Sam Kimmel.
The IronBirds continued to further their lead in the bottom of the sixth inning when Bernadina scored off of a bunt RBI single by Boss and in the bottom of the seventh inning when Caronia scored off of a wild pitch by P Stephan Lopez.
In their final at bat, the Birds' plated eleven runs to take the series, 2-1. Yankees capped off the scoring with 4 runs in the ninth inning breaking the record for total runs scored in a game.
The IronBirds travel to Niles, OH on Wednesday, July 4 to begin their three-game series with the Mahoning Valley Scrappers. RHP Juan Guzman (0-0, 1.93) will start for the IronBirds while RHP Jake Sisco (0-1, 3.86) will start for the Scrappers.
