Memphis, TN- Claudio Vargas and the Nashville bullpen won the pitching battle as they shutout Memphis 2-0 at AutoZone Park on Friday night.
'Birds starter Tyler Lyons fell to 0-4 on the year as he allowed two runs, both solo home runs, on five hits with eight strikeouts.
"Our pitching staff turned a great performance tonight," Memphis manager Ron "Pop" Warner said. "We just couldn't get the run support we needed tonight."
The Sounds' Claudio Vargas improved to 3-1 on the year pitching a five-hit shutout while allowing five hits and striking out three.
Edwin Maysonet scored the first run of the game for Nashville smacking a home run to left field, while an injury to Jordan Schafer in the fourth would prove slightly beneficial as his replacement, Caleb Gindl, connected on the next solo home run to improve the Sounds' lead to 2-0.
The Nashville bullpen combined for three scoreless innings to close the game as Jim Henderson successfully converted his 10th save of the season.
The I-40 Series continues as the Redbirds and Sounds are back in action tomorrow on Saturday, July 7, at 6:05 p.m. (CT) at AZP.
