The Redbirds faced a familiar foe in former Cardinals' farm-hand Gary Daley Jr. of the RockHounds against Seth Maness, who was coming off a seven shutout inning performance on the 4th of July.
Springfield wasted no time getting to their former teammate as they plate six first inning runs. With one out and two base hits later, Jamie Romak singled to right to start the scoring. Chris Swauger followed by reaching on an error driving in a run. Jake Shaffer delivered a sacrifice fly and Audry Perez lifted a two-run triple down the right field line. A wild pitch by Daley scored Perez to cap the scoring and give the Cardinals a 6-0 lead.
In the 4th, the Cardinals added three more runs against Daley as Chris Swauger hit a sacrifice fly and Jake Shaffer blasted a two-run homer to make it 9-0.
Seth Maness was dominant again and left the after five shutout innings on just three hits with two strikeouts.
Springfield added four more to their tally in the 7th as Greg Garcia, Jermaine Curtis and Oscar Taveras singled to load the bases before Swuager connected on a grand slam home run, his 9th of the season, to blow the game open 13-0.
Jesse Simpson gave the Cardinals two scoreless out of the bullpen. Kevin Thomas allowed the only runs to Midland as the RockHounds plated three in the 8th against the righty. Deryk Hooker threw a scoreless 9th to finish off the 13-3 win.
Springfield will conclude their three-game series in Midland tomorrow night at 6:30pm. Scott McGregor will start for the Cardinals against Fabio Castro of Midland.
The Cardinals will return to Hammons Field Thursday, July 12th to take on the NW Arkansas Naturals.
