Roman Quinn was stranded at third in the first inning. Two were left in scoring position in both the second and fourth innings. Larry Greene killed an eighth inning rally with a double play, and Brian Pointer couldn't keep a comeback going in the ninth.
Overall, a frustrating day at the plate for Williamsport.
Quinn had three hits, Chris Serritella went 2-for-4 with another extra-base hit, and Greene again finished with a multi-hit night, but the lack of timely hitting really hurt the Cutters in a game in which the usually suspect pitching did its job.
Jordan Guth was far from stellar, but ate up six innings while allowing four runs, and once again did not walk a batter. He has now pitched the first 22 innings of his pro career without surrendering a walk.
Williamsport went on the board first in the second inning, when an error on the ValleyCat defense scored Mitch Walding from second.
But Ryan Dineen homered in the third for Tri-City, before a Tyler Heineman single and a Jobduan Morales groundout in the fourth made it 3-1 ValleyCats.
Tyler Greene pulled a liner to left to cut it to 3-2, but Tri-City scored one more in the fifth to give themselves a 4-2 lead that would stick to the end.
Andre Kinder and Jeb Stefan continued their strong pitching, combining for three scoreless innings of relief, but the untimely hitting would ultimately be Williamsport's demise in their tenth loss in 13 tries.
The Cutters are now 9-14 on the season and sit in last place in the division. They'll hope the pitching stays strong Thursday night in a 7:05 bout with Tri-City. You can listen to every pitch on ESPN Radio Williamsport 1050am, 104.1fm, or online at crosscutters.com
