Michael Roth made his professional debut, but the Owlz could not capitalize on multiple scoring chances in a 6-3 loss in Billings on Wednesday evening.
Roth made his much anticipated debut in the first of a seven game road trip for the Owlz, but he picked up the loss, surrendering two runs in 1.2 innings of work.
It was a solid first inning for Roth, as he gave up just one hit and got a double play to face the minimum. However, in the second inning, he walked and hit a batter with one out to put two men on. He got Robert Ramirez to pop out for the second out of the inning, but back-to-back RBI singles chased Roth from the game.
Billings got two more runs in the fourth inning off of Pat Lowery. Lowery walked the leadoff batter and Ramirez followed with a RBI triple. The right-hander got the next two outs, but then surrendered a RBI single to Sammy Diaz to put the Owlz behind 4-0.
Orem did not go away, as it made some major noise in the 6th inning. Michael Snyder and Wade Hinkle walked to start the frame, and Michael Bolaski, Jonathan Walsh and Wendell Soto all followed with RBI singles. The Owlz trailed 4-3 and had men at 1st and 3rd with no outs, but a sacrifice bunt, strikeout and ground out ended the threat.
The Owlz almost took the lead in the 8th inning, loading the bases on an error to get Bolaski on, a Walsh single and a Soto bunt single. However, Sam Mulroy flied out to shallow right and Chevy Clarke grounded into a double play. Billings put the game away in the bottom of the 8th on a 2-run home run by Wagner Gomez.
Ismael Guillon fired five shutout innings, striking out seven batters to pick up his first win of the season. Guillon allowed Snyder to double off of him in the 1st inning, which extended Snyder's hitting streak to 17 games. Orem will face Billings in the second game of the series on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. All the action can be heard at audio.oremowlz.com.
