Cardinals Lose Slug-Fest 20-9
08/12/2012 10:40 PM ET
Corpus Christi, TX - The Springfield Cardinals lost to the Corpus Christi Hooks 20-9 Sunday night and set three new franchise records; most runs allowed (20), most runs allowed in an inning (12) and most combined runs in a game (29).

Scott McGregor started for Springfield trying to bounce back after a tough outing five days ago against matt Heidenreich of the Hooks.

The Hooks jumped out to an early lead in the 1st inning getting back to back homers from Jon Singleton and Drew Locke with two outs to lead 2-0.

Corpus Christi added single runs in the 2nd and 3rd as well, one on a safety squeeze and another on an RBI single by Ben Orloff to make it 4-0 after three innings.

Springfield did not have a bases runner until there was one out in the 4th and Jermaine Curtis singled to right. Oscar Taveras reached on an error and Jamie Romak single to load the bases. Xavier Scruggs followed with a two-run double and Greg Garcia added an RBI groundout to bring the Redbirds within a run, 4-3.

The Cardinals would take their first lead of the game in the 6th as Scruggs tied the game with an RBI fielder's choice, Greg Garcia triple down the right field line and Audry Perez reached on an error to plat another run making it 6-4.

That lead would be short lived however as the Hooks went on the send 16 men to the plate in the bottom of the 6th scoring 12 runs on eight hits while drawing five walks. Springfield used four pitchers, three in relief, and trail 16-6 after the 6th inning.

Springfield got three of those runs back in the 8th as Greg Garcia delivered a two-run double and Audry Perez added a sacrifice fly to make it 16-9.

But, the Hooks added four more in the 8th on an RBI double by Robbie Grossman and a three-run homer by Singleton, his second of the night to make it the eventual 20-9 score.

Corpus Christi finished 10-for-15 with runners in scoring position in the game.

The Cardinals will conclude their three-game series with the Corpus Christi Hooks Monday night at 7:05pm. Springfield will have Richard Castillo on the mound against Paul Clemens of the Hooks.

Springfield will return to Hammons Field Wednesday for a six-game homestand beginning with three against San Antonio. Great tickets are still available, so visit the Hammons Field Ticket Office, go online at springfieldcardinals.com or call (417) 863-2143.
