Sweep City, Cards Win 5-1
08/17/2012 10:33 PM ET
Springfield, MO - The Springfield Cardinals got another brilliant home start from right hander Seth Maness to complete a three game sweep of the San Antonio Missions with a 5-1 victory.

After a scoreless first inning for both clubs, Springfield opened the scoring in the bottom of the second. Xavier Scruggs and Adam Melker started the inning with back to back singles to put runners on the corners. Audry Perez then bounced a ball to second under the glove of Jonathan Galvez scoring Scruggs to give Springfield a 1-0 lead. Ray Kruml then grounded out to second to drive home Melker and Kolten Wong tripled into right center field to score Perez to make it a 3-0 advantage.

In the 4th, Ray Kruml bounced into a double play to plate Adam Melker, who had singled to start the frame, to give Springfield a 4-0 lead.

Maness had yet to allow a hit into the 5th, but Missions' third baseman Edinson Rincon lifted a solo homer to left to make it a 4-1 game.

Springfield added another run in the 7th as Kolten Wong doubled to start the inning and scored on a one out single from Jermaine Curtis to center field to give the Redbirds a four-run lead, 5-1.

Seth Maness was brilliant yet again at Hammons Field going eight innings allowing just a run on three hits while striking out six. Michael Blazek finished off the 5-1 win with a scoreless 9th inning.

Springfield will begin a three-game series with the Corpus Christi Hooks tomorrow night at 6:08pm. The Cardinals will have Scott McGregor on the mound against Matt Heidenreich of the Hooks.
