With Las Vegas losing earlier in the day, Sacramento had a chance to reduce their magic number to two with a victory. The River Cats scored first when Taylor drove in Cowgill in the bottom of the third, but they allowed the Bees to score once in the fourth and three times in the third.
With his team trailing 4-1 in the bottom of the ninth, Brandon Inge led off with a double down the left field line. The next batter, Kila Ka'aihue, grounded out to first, moving Inge to third. After Taylor drew a walk, Grant Green popped out to the first baseman, bringing Brandon Hicks to the plate with the runners and the corners. Hicks, who hit a grand slam against the Bees on Thursday, worked the count full before singling up the middle, scoring Inge and moving Taylor to third. The next batter, Jason Jaramillo, struck out swinging, giving the Cats a 4-2 loss.
Brad Peacock started and gave up three runs in 4.2 innings of work, suffering the loss. He exited in the fifth inning after taking a line drove off of his right elbow. James Simmons gave up one earned run in 1.1 innings of relief, before Justin Souza, Rich Thompson and Jeremy Accardo held the Bees scoreless for the game's final three innings.
Weeks finished 2-for-4 with a walk and now has seven hits in three games with Sacramento. Cowgill went 2-for-5 with a run and a steal, while Taylor finished 2-for-4 with an RBI, a walk and his team-leading 18th stolen base.
Barry Enright was the winning pitcher, giving up one run in five innings. He improved his record to 12-7 on the year, and Bobby Cassevah picked up his 10th save of the season.
The River Cats now hit the road for their final eight games of the regular season. If they hang on to win the division crown, their first home playoff games will come on Sept. 5-6 at Raley Field. Tomorrow's 5:05 p.m. game in Colorado Springs will pit Sky Sox right-handed pitcher Ricky Brooks (0-3, 9.00 ERA) against a River Cats starter who is to be determined.
