Oklahoma City, Okla. - The Oklahoma City RedHawks (74-64) used two big innings plus an outstanding night on the mound to pound the Albuquerque Isotopes (77-62) 11-0 before 2,946 at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark Wednesday night.
With the win the RedHawks pulled within 2.5 games of first-place Albuquerque with one game left against the Isotopes and five left to play overall.
Three RedHawks pitchers combined to fire the team's fourth shutout of the season, as well as their first since May 29. Edgar Gonzalez, Enerio Del Rosario, and Garrett Mock limited the Isotopes to five hits with no walks and eight strikeouts. Albuquerque never had multiple runners on base and only had a runner in scoring position three times. No Isotope ever reached third base.
Gonzalez (4-3) had another outstanding start, going seven frames. He scattered four hits and struck out six. Over his first two starts with the RedHawks, Gonzalez has allowed one earned run and just six hits over 13 innings.
Mike Hessman broke a scoreless tie with his 33rd home run of the season in the fourth inning.
The RedHawks started to break things open with five runs in the sixth. J.D. Martinez knocked a two-run double, and two batters later, Angel Sanchez connected on a three-run homer. It was Sanchez's first home run since June 10.
The RedHawks poured it on with five more in the eighth. Carlos Corporan drove in a pair with a double while Marc Krauss, Brad Snyder, and Matt Down each collected RBIs as well.
Oklahoma City finished with 16 hits, seven for extra bases. Five players had multi-hit nights, including rehabbing Astros outfielder Jordan Schafer. Sanchez and Matt Dominguez led the way with three hits apiece.
Albuquerque pitcher Derrick Loop left the game before it got ugly, but still walked away with the loss. Loop (11-4) was charged with three runs and six hits over five-plus innings, striking out two with one walk.
The RedHawks will shoot for a sweep of the Isotopes Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. on the final $1 beer night of the season. Tickets are available at the box office on S. Mickey Mantle Drive, by calling (405) 218-1000, or ordering through okcredhawks.com.
