01/22/2013 12:47 PM ET
Zebulon, N.C. - The Carolina Mudcats received clutch hitting from right fielder Todd Hankins to rally past the Potomac Nationals 6-2 before a crowd of 1,734 on Wednesday night at Five County Stadium.

Will Roberts (5-9) got the win for Carolina (30-35, 62-73) by pitching his longest out of the year. The right-hander held Potomac to two runs on eight hits over 7.1 innings. He struck out four without allowing a walk.

Rob Nixon earned his first save by pitching the final 1.1 innings. He got the Mudcats out of a bases loaded jam in the seventh by striking out Steven Souza Jr. Nixon extended his scoreless innings streak to 16.1 innings in the process.

Taylor Hill (0-1) took the loss after allowing four runs on six hits over 6.1 innings. Potomac drops to 30-34, 61-73 overall, and now sits four games behind the Wilmington Blue Rocks for first place in the Northern division.

Giovanny Urshela got the scoring started in the first inning. Carolina's third baseman cracked a two-run homer off the videoboard in left field, his 13th blast of the year. Potomac tied the game by scoring a pair in the sixth inning on three hits before the Mudcats made their final surge.

Tyler Cannon cracked a double to lead off the seventh inning. With the score tied 2-2, Cannon moved to third on a wild pitch. After Ronny Rodriguez popped out with the infield in, Hankins laced a single into left, scoring Cannon for a 3-2 lead. The hit proved to be the eventual game-winner.

Hankins scored on a double by Alex Monsalve, his second hit of the night, for a 4-2 advantage. The Mudcats put the game away in the eighth when Tony Wolters led off the frame with his seventh home run of the year. The shot towered high over the right field wall. Cannon later recorded his third hit of the night, and scored on the second base hit for Hankins to finish the scoring.

The Carolina Mudcats continue their series with the Potomac Nationals on Thursday, August 30, at 7:15 p.m. Tickets are available by calling (919) 269-2287 or visiting carolinamudcats.com.
