The final regular season game of the season typically runs quickly, Monday's game was no different lasting just two hours and seven minutes. Cardinals Starter Boone Whiting was excellent tossing six scoreless innings on just five hits with four strikeouts. Arkansas had runners on the corners twice with two outs in the 1st and 4th innings, but Whiting pitched around it both times.
Kevin Siegrist entered in the 7th and hit a man with one out before throwing a wild pitch to move Carlos Ramirez to second base. A ground out moved him to third. With two down, Darwin Perez laced a one-hop grounder to first that Xavier Scruggs dove for and knocked down to retire the side keeping the score 0-0.
Matt Oye was brilliant for the Travelers throwing seven shutout innings allowing just two hits, the first coming from Adam Melker in the 5th inning with two outs. Ryan Chaffee followed with a scoreless 8th.
Springfield had their first scoring threat in the 9th inning as Jermaine Curtis doubled with two outs and Oscar Taveras was intentionally walked. Jamie Romak came up against Chaffee and lined out to center field to end the threat.
In the bottom of the 9th, Justin Wright allowed a two-out double to Alex Yarbrough before Carlos Ramirez drew a walk. That set the stage for Drew Heid who fell behind in the count 1-2 before driving a single up the middle to score Yarbrough with the one and only run of the game.
Springfield not only started the season with a 1-0 loss to Frisco, but finished the season with 1-0 loss to the Travelers.
The Cardinals are headed to playoffs for the first time since 2010 and will take on the Tulsa Drillers in a best-of-five series beginning Wednesday night at 7:05pm. Springfield will send right hander Carlos Martinez to the mound against righty Parker Frazier in Game One at ONEOK Field.
Springfield will return home for game three of the North Division Playoffs Friday, Sept. 7th at 7:08pm. Great tickets are still available, so visit the Hammons Field Ticket Office, go online at springfieldcardinals.com or call (417) 863-2143.
