Mets Sign Pitchers Rice & Torres to Minor League Contracts

FLUSHING, N.Y., November 20, 2012 - The New York Mets today announced the club agreed to terms with left-handed pitcher Scott Rice and right-handed pitcher Carlos Torres on minor league contracts and invited both to major league Spring Training.

Rice, 31, spent last season in the Los Angeles Dodgers' organization, appearing in 54 games out of the bullpen for Albuquerque (AAA) of the Pacific Coast League. The 6-6, 225-pound native of Simi Valley, CA, finished 2-3 with nine saves and a 4.40 ERA (29 earned runs/59.1 innings).

Torres, 30, split last season between Colorado and the organization's Triple-A club, Colorado Springs of the Pacific Coast League. The 6-1, 185-pound native of Santa Cruz, CA, began the year with the Sky Sox, and in 14 games, 13 starts, went 5-4 with a 3.98 ERA (27 earned runs/61.0 innings). He made 31 relief appearances for the Rockies, compiling a 5.26 ERA (31 earned runs/53.0 innings) and a 5-3 record.

Torres made his major league debut with Chicago (AL) in 2009 and in 44 career games, six starts, he is 6-6 with a 5.97 ERA (63 earned runs/95.0 innings) at the major league level.
