12/17/2012 3:27 PM ET

CORPUS CHRISTI - Calallen graduate Logan Verrett, a right-handed pitcher, is the Mike Adams South Texas Professional Player of the Year for 2012.

Verrett will be honored at the Ninth South Texas Winter Baseball Banquet January 23 at the Omni Bayfront Hotel. The event is presented by the Corpus Christi Caller-Times and ClearChannel Radio and tickets are on sale at the Whataburger Field box office. To order by phone, call 361-561-HOOK (4665).

Verrett, 22, compiled a 5-2 record and 2.70 ERA in 17 starts between Class A Savannah of the South Atlantic League and Advanced-A St. Lucie in the Florida State League. He limited the opposition to a .220 batting average and struck out 93 over 103 innings while issuing just 13 walks.

The 6-foot-2, 180-pound Verrett was taken in the third round of the 2011 amateur draft by the New York Mets. He was 19-10 (3.55) at Baylor from 2009-11 under Steve Smith and ranks seventh in school history with 257 strikeouts. A two-time All-Big 12 selection, Verrett walked 73 over 246 innings and 53 appearances.

At Calallen for coach Steve Chapman, Verrett led the Wildcats to the 2008 Class 4A state championship. That club was 42-1 and finished ninth nationally. Verrett, who went 18-0 with a 0.67 earned run average, was Texas Sports Writers Association Class 4A Player of the Year and first-team all-state.

The Professional Player of the Year Award is named for Sinton and Texas A&M-Kingsville standout Mike Adams, who captured the honor four times (2004-08-10-11). Adams signed a two-year, $12 million deal with the Phillies last week.  He's one of baseball's premier set-up men and has pitched for the Brewers, Padres and Rangers in an eight-year MLB career. Over the last five seasons, Adams has a 1.98 ERA in 297 games with 311 strikeouts to 81 walks over 295 innings.
