Flashback Friday returns from the Christmas break with the details of Game Two of the 1942 Wisconsin State League Playoff Series between the Appleton Papermakers and the Green Bay Bluejays.

The Bluejays won Game One in Green Bay on a ninth inning rally.  Game Two was held in Green Bay on September 4.  Future Major League pitcher - and member of the Appleton Professional Baseball Hall of Fame - Mike Garcia took the hill for the Papermakers to try and even the series.

Dick Davis has the (brief) story in the September 5, 1942 edition of The Post-Crescent.

Green Bay - Poor support behind Jim Daublender's 4-hit pitching cost the Green Bay Bluejays a 4 to 0 shutout from the Appleton Papermakers here Friday night, making it one game apiece in the opening round of the Wisconsin State league playoffs.

Mike Garcia, the winning hurler, was in fine form as he allowed six bingles and whiffed 10 in critical spots.  The Bluejays committed five errors and three of Appleton's runs were unearned.

Daublender made a shaky start, loading the bases in the first inning with two walks and an infield single by Bill Pardo, but Ken Manarik grounded to Vince Oddo at second to end the threat.  One argument enlivened the game.  In the eighth inning, Bluejay Ordie Timm drove a liner directly at Kowalski in left field.  The entire Appleton outfield claimed that Kowalski had caught the ball, but base umpire Pepper Chapman insisted that it had touched the ground.

After five scoreless innings, the Papers came through with two markers in the sixth.  Grant Dunlap fanned and Pardon walked.  Manarik flied out to Bob Perther in center and Red Squier was safe on shortstop Jim Delsing's muff, going to second as Pardon made third.  Russ Adams was safe on Earl Gillespie's bobble at first scoring Pardon and Squier.

Appleton got two more in the ninth when Adams was safe on Delsing's bobble and advanced to second on Garcia's sacrifice.  Andy Anderson was safe on a fielder's choice while Adams beat the throw to third.  Adams and Anderson scored when Bill Elliott singled to right and he gained third on Art Allendorf's bad throw.

Rest of Tilts Here

The third and fourth games of the Wisconsin State league Shaughnessy playoff will be played at 8 o'clock tonight and Sunday night at Spencer park.  Ernie Groth will be on the mound for Appleton tonight and Green Bay's probable pitcher will be Hendrichs.  Ken Duncan more than likely will get the starting assignment Sunday night.  Ken is hankering to show the hometown fans how he stands them on their ear when on the road.  Ed Kowalski also is ready for duty.

If a fifth game is required, it will stay in Appleton and would be played at 8 o'clock Labor day night.  The team winning three out of five games will tangle with the winner of the Sheboygan-Fond du Lac series in  4-out-of-7 series for the playoff championship.  Fond du Lac, which finished third in the regular season, squared its series with the league champions by scoring an 8 to 2 win last night.

Green Bay's attendance has been rather slim and Appleton fans are expected to turn out in full force both to support the now brilliant Papermakers and show up the meager Bluejay following.
