Mets Sign Landon Powell With Spring Training Invite

FLUSHING, N.Y., January 18, 2013 - The New York Mets today announced the club signed catcher Landon Powell to a minor league contract with an invitation to major league Spring Training.

Powell, 30, spent last season with Houston's Triple-A club, Oklahoma of the Pacific Coast League, after going to Spring Training with Oakland. The 6-3, 265-pound switch hitter hit .251 (60-239) with eight home runs and 38 RBI in 79 games with the RedHawks, and was named a midseason All-Star.

Originally drafted by Oakland in the first round (24th overall) of the 2004 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of South Carolina, Powell made his major league debut with the Athletics in 2009. In 123 major league games over parts of three seasons with the A's, Powell has a .207 (75-363) career batting average, along with 10 home runs and 45 RBI.
