LAS VEGAS: The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA) and the Las Vegas 51s professional baseball team of the Pacific Coast League (PCL), Triple-A affiliate of the New York Mets, announced today that Fox Sports Southwest (FSSW) will televise and WGN Radio Chicago will broadcast Big League Weekend featuring the Texas Rangers vs. Chicago Cubs on Saturday-Sunday, March 16-17. The Spring Training games for the two-game series will feature split squads and the first pitch for both contests are scheduled for 1:05 p.m. at Cashman Field.
Fox Sports Southwest is in its 13th season as the rights holder for all Texas Rangers cable telecasts. Steve Busby and Tom Grieve will call the action for the two-game series in the Silver State.
WGN Radio 720-AM "The Voice of Chicago" (clear channel, 50,000 watts) returns to Cashman Field to broadcast the two-game series with Pat Hughes and Keith Moreland calling the action. WGN Radio is the home of Cubs baseball, Blackhawks hockey and Northwestern University football and men's basketball.
"Las Vegas receives tremendous exposure on the television coverage by Fox Sports Southwest (FSSW) as well as on the radio side with WGN Chicago," 51s General Manager Chuck Johnson said. "The two-game series with the Cubs-Rangers will provide the LVCVA the opportunity to advertise into two key tourist markets."
The 51s, under manager Wally Backman, will open their 31st season in the Silver State on Thursday, April 4 against division-rival, the Sacramento River Cats, Triple-A affiliate of the Oakland A's, at Sacramento, Calif. Las Vegas' home opener is Friday, April 12 against the Colorado Springs Sky Sox, Triple-A affiliate of the Colorado Rockies, at 7:05 p.m. at Cashman Field.
