Senators Rally Late but Fall Short 9-7 to New Britain
04/09/2013 11:09 PM ET

The Senators mounted rallies on two occasions late in the game, but their surge in the ninth inning came up short, as they dropped the game to the New Britain Rock Cats 9-7 at Metro Bank Park.

Down 5-1 in the seventh, the Senators batted around and tied the game. The first two men of the inning were retired, but Brian Goodwin got the rally started with a single. Sean Nicol singled before Anthony Rendon drove home Goodwin with a single of his own to make it 5-2. Jerad Head walked, loading the bases for Destin Hood, who came up with a two-run opposite-field triple off the fence in right to tie it.

The Rock Cats responded with a four-run inning of their own in the ninth to take a 9-5 lead. Evan Bigley's two-run double was the biggest hit of the inning for New Britain.

The Senators wouldn't go away quietly, though. With one out, Rendon walked. Then, with two outs Head and Hood both singled, loading the bases for Justin Bloxom, who came up with a two-run single to make it 9-7. After a walk to Sandy Leon, the bases were loaded for Ricky Hague. He hit a ball right on the screws, but it was straight at second baseman Harold Garcia, who made the play to end the game.

Bobby Lannigan was credited with the win in relief for New Briatain. Pat Lehman took the loss for the Senators.
