San Bernardino, CA - The Inland Empire 66ers (4-2) secured a winning season opening homestand with a 7-4 win Tuesday night over the High Desert Mavericks (1-5). Mark Sappington allowed just one hit in seven innings to get the win and Alex Yarbrough was the offensive star smashing the first home run of his pro career.
Once again an Inland Empire starting pitcher was able to dominate the opposition as Mark Sappington limited the Mavericks to one unearned run on a single hit in his seven innings of work. That effort brought the 66ers their second consecutive quality start and their second consecutive victory for a starting pitcher.
At the plate the 66ers posted their second straight season high for runs in a game against the High Desert starter Trevor Miller. Inland Empire scored seven runs including a home run by Alex Yarbrough in the 3rd and a two run triple by Zach Borenstein in the 5th which, after a throwing error, he scored on to make it 7-1 Inland Empire.
Inland Empire faltered in the 9th, allowing three runs to the Mavs, but would not fall. The win gives the 66ers a shot at a sweep of their division rivals if they can win Wednesday night. Start time is 7:05 PM and the game can be heard beginning with the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians Pre-Game Show on the home of 66ers baseball KCAA 1050 AM.
