Savannah, GA - The Rome Braves defeated the Savannah Sand Gnats 2-1 Sunday afternoon at Historic Grayson Stadium to earn a split of the teams' two-game series.
The Braves (6-4) came back with two runs in the top of the sixth. Savannah starter Rainy Lara was perfect through four innings, but gave up a single leading off the fifth. In the sixth, with the Gnats (5-5) up 1-0, he allowed a leadoff single. Then, Lara's own throwing error on a subsequent bunt play put runners at the corners with no outs. Lara then walked SS Jose Peraza to load the bases. An out later, DH Josh Elander stroked a single to centerfield to drive home two and put Rome up 2-1.
The Gnats scored their only run in the bottom of the third on an RBI fielders' choice by RF Eudy Pina. The bottom three spots in the Gnats' batting order combined on six of the team's eight hits. At #7, 3B Cole Frenzel, who was 2-for-3 with a walk, scored the run. SS Philip Evans was 3-for-4 with three singles from the eight spot in the batting order. Pina, batting ninth, was 1-for-4.
CF Brandon Nimmo was 2-for-4 to lift his season batting average to .405 (15 H/37 AB).
The teams combined on 12 hits, all of which were single.
The Gnats begin a seven game road trip to Greensboro and Lakewood Monday night in Greensboro, NC. After an off-day next Monday, the Gnats play 10 games in 11 days at Historic Grayson Stadium on Tuesday, April 23 with a Two-for-Tuesday presented by Sports Radio 102.1 and Natty Light.
