It was a tough night at the ballpark for Clippers as they were swept by the Toledo Mud Hens in a doubleheader at Fifth Third Field.
On Thursday night, the Mud Hens would start off fast offensively, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first on a Nick Castellanos RBI double and a Jordan Lennerton RBI sacrifice fly.
After heavy rain postponed the game on Thursday, both team would get back at it on Friday. Toledo would add another run in the bottom of the fifth on a Kevin Russo RBI sacrifice fly.
Columbus would get on the board when Adam Abraham drove home Luis Hernandez with an RBI triple to left field in the top of the sixth, but that would be it for the Columbus offense as the Hens held on for the 3-1 victory. Luke Putkonen (W, 1-0) got the win for Toledo. Daisuke Matsuzaka (L, 0-1) took the loss for Columbus. Bruce Rondon (S, 2) shut the door in the ninth to garner the save for the Mud Hens.
In game 2 of the unique Friday doubleheader, it would be Columbus who would draw first blood on the scoreboard when Jeremy Hermida came through with a two out RBI single in the top of the third. That lead would be short-lived for Columbus as Toledo tied it in the bottom of the third with a Brad Davis RBI sacrifice fly.
The Mud Hens would then take a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth on John Lindsey RBI double, but that would not last long either as Clippers outfielder Cedric Hunter tied the contest with an RBI single in the top of the sixth.
Another run would not be scored until the ninth. Luis Hernandez knocked in a run with an RBI single in the top of the ninth. It looked as though that Columbus had done enough to get the victory, but it was not to be as Toledo's John Lindsey clubbed a two run bomb over the center field wall, allowing the Hens to walk off with a 4-3 win and complete the twin bill sweep. Jose Ortega (W, 1-0) received the victory for Toledo. Preston Guilmet (L, 0-1) was the hard luck loser for Columbus.
The Clippers will return home to Huntington Park as Columbus opens a three game home stand against Toledo. Columbus sends right-hander Carlos Carrasco to the mound. The Hens will counter with righty Pat Misch (0-2, 7.50). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
