SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS (APRIL 22, 2013) - Frisco traveled to San Antonio to open up a four-game series and fell 5-1 at Nelson W. Wolff Municipal Stadium on Monday night. Cody Buckel put together his longest outing of the season but went just three innings and took his third loss of the year.
For the fourth straight start, command was an issue for Buckel. He walked six batters in his three innings of work, including four in the first frame, which was his undoing. Three runs came across in the inning for San Antonio (8-9), including an RBI base-on-balls issued to Jake Blackwood.
When Alex Buchholz came to the plate to lead off the second, Frisco trailed 3-0, but he did what he could. The 'Riders third baseman whacked his third home run of the year to deep left center field to cut the lead to two runs.
Buckel did manage to rebound for a couple of scoreless innings in the second and third, but the Missions' starting pitcher Jose De Paula had all the run support he needed.
The RoughRiders (10-7) mustered just three hits the rest of the way, two off De Paula. Although they strung together two base knocks in the sixth, Teodoro Martinez was tagged out trying to advance to third on a ground ball in the infield, and the 'Riders were kept off the scoreboard for the remainder of the contest.
Tyler Tufts and Randy Henry both allowed runs out of the bullpen, although Henry's was unearned. An error on a missed pop-up in foul ground off the bat of Tommy Medica gave him second life, and he crushed his fifth home run off of Henry in the eighth. Despite the minor blemish, the relief corps continues to shine in the first half, putting together five innings with just one earned run, four hits, a pair of strikeouts and a walk to their combined ledger in the game. The bullpen has surrendered just nine earned runs in 71.1 innings pitched this season (1.14 ERA).
Buckel (0-3) took the loss and De Paula (1-2) collected his first win. With two perfect innings in relief, Josh Greer notched his first save of the campaign for the Missions.
The RoughRiders play in San Antonio again Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. The pitching matchup pits Frisco's Neil Ramirez (1-0, 1.88 ERA) against the Mission's right-hander Burch Smith (1-1, 1.13 ERA). Fans can tune in to the play-by-play broadcast on www.RidersBaseball.com beginning at 6:40.
