MYRTLE BEACH, SC - Facing one of top pitchers in the Carolina League on Tuesday night, the Keys used patience to their advantage. LHP Victor Payano walked three batters in the second inning and surrendered five runs to give the Keys plenty of run support. Frederick plated five more runs in the eighth inning. All seven of the Keys' hits came in either the second or the eighth inning. LHP Tim Berry notched his first win of the season on Tuesday allowed just one run over five innings of work.
Victor Payano entered his fourth start of the season on Tuesday night with an ERA of 1.88. After a scoreless first inning, Payano struggled to find the strike zone in the second. He walked the first three batters that stepped to the plate in the frame. Steve Bumbry drove in the first run of the game on a fielder's choice. After Mikey Planeta popped out in foul ground, Sammie Starr put down a two-out, RBI bunt single. CF Glynn Davis followed with the big hit of the inning, a two-run double. Travis Adair capped of the frame with a RBI single to center field. In all, the Keys plated five runs on four hits in the second inning.
Payano exited following the Davis two-run double. Over 1.2 innings, Payano allowed five runs on three hits while walking four and striking out none.
The Keys would not register another hit until the eighth inning.
Tim Berry was solid on the hill on Tuesday night. Berry allowed one run on five hits over five innings of work. He walked one and struck out six en route to his first win of the season.
The Pelicans threatened in the sixth inning against RHP Eric Beaulac. Myrtle Beach loaded the bases with one out but only managed to get one run across.
Up three entering the eighth, the Keys busted the game open with another five run inning. With three runs already home in the frame, Travis Adair capped off the inning with a two-run triple to right field.
Zach Fowler closed out the game with three scoreless innings of relief and picked up his first save of the year.
Offensively, Glynn Davis and Travis Adair each had three RBI on the night while Steve Bumbry and Sammie Starr both drove in two.
The Keys and Pelicans will play game three of the four-game series on Wednesday night in Myrtle Beach. Frederick will turn to RHP Zach Petersime (0-1, 8.10) while RHP Jerad Eickhoff (1-2, 6.75) will toe the rubber for the Pelicans. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. with coverage beginning at 6:35 p.m. with the Frederick Gorilla Pregame Show on AM 1450 The Source.
