Suns' Yelich hits first Double-A homer

Squirrels, Rock Cats score 15 runs; Barons one-hit Lookouts

Marlins No. 2 prospect Christian Yelich highlighted a back-and-forth contest by belting his first homer of the season as Jacksonville edged Jackson, 7-6, in the first game of a scheduled doubleheader.

The 21-year-old outfielder also walked and scored twice and is batting .281 with five doubles, two triples and 11 RBIs through 13 Southern League games. He missed the start of the season with a foot injury.

Derek Dietrich -- Miami's No. 8 prospect -- and Audy Ciriaco also hit two-run homers in the victory.

Generals shortstop Gabriel Noriega went 3-for-3 with a triple and two runs scored before being pulled for a pinch-hitter in the sixth inning. Mariners No. 13 prospect Vinnie Catricala doubled and drove in three runs.

The nightcap was canceled due to rain.

Five pitchers combined on a one-hitter as Birmingham blanked Chattanooga, 8-0, nit the completion of a suspended game.

Relievers Nick McCully, Jake Petricka, Santos Rodriguez and Daniel Webb combined to throw 5 2/3 hitless innings when play resumed Saturday to finish. Erik Johnson yielded one hit and one walk while striking out four over 3 1/3 innings when play was halted Friday night.

Catcher Mike Blanke led the Barons with a double, single and three RBIs.

 

The Barons completed the sweep with a 3-2, eight-inning triumph in the nightcap as Andy Wilkins delivered a walk-off single.

Brad Glenn went 2-for-5 with a double and five RBIs to lead New Hampshire to a 15-5 rout of Reading. Shortstop Kevin Nolan homered and drove in four runs, while center fielder Kevin Pillar went 4-for-5 with a walk, two RBIs and three runs scored out of the leadoff spot for the Fisher Cats.

Phillies top prospect Jesse Biddle retired only two batters and took the loss after surrendering three runs on four hits and a walk.

The Fisher Cats were not the only Eastern League to put up a 15-spot on Saturday. Richmond matched that in a 15-8 win over Trenton. Mark Minicozzi doubled twice, drove in four runs and scored three times to do the most damage. Jarrett Parker also chipped in four RBIs on a triple and a double.

Yankees No. 3 prospect Tyler Austin hit his second homer of the year for the Thunder.
