Rancho Cucamonga, CA- - Zach Borenstein is turning heads with a mammoth first month in the California League. The Inland Empire 66ers (17-14) outfielder hit his 10th home run of the season and picked up his 22nd RBI in a 9-3 loss to the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes (17-15). Those stats are ahead of what Angels 1st round pick and 2012 California League Rookie of the Year C.J. Cron had at this point last season.
On a night in which the 66ers had to settle for some superlative statistics rather than a win it was Rancho Cucamonga who had the most impressive stats of all. At the plate Darnell Sweeney hit for the cycle, starting his night four-for-four with a 1st inning homer, 3rd inning triple, 4th inning RBI single, and he held up at second for a double in the 6th. Sweeney ended the night with three runs scored and two driven in.
On the mound Duke Von Schamann delivered his fourth quality start in four tries at home for the Quakes, despite allowing an RBI double to Brian Hernandez, and giving up a home run to 66ers catcher Zach Wright, his first of the season. Borenstein's blast came in the 9th inning to cap a 3-for-4 effort on his part, which was just a triple shy of his own cycle. But it came too late as the 66ers were already down seven runs, and were only able to change the final totals, not the outcome..
The Inland Empire 66ers continue the road trip Wednesday at Rancho Cucamonga with a 10:35 AM matchup against the Quakes. The game can be heard on the 66ers flagship station AM 1050 KCAA. The 66ers return home Friday, May 10th for a Toyota and Scion of Redlands 50 cent Friday and a Halo Hat giveaway presented by Frozen Ropes.
