Beavers hold off Pilots 4-3
05/10/2013 4:06 PM ET

KEIZER-The Oregon State Beavers escaped with a victory in a 4-3 nail-biter against the Portland Pilots Wednesday at Volcanoes Stadium. The Beavers quickly fell behind as the Pilots posted a run in the bottom of the second, but turned it around offensively thanks to a three-run fifth inning. Leadoff hitter Tyler Smith went 3-for-4 for the Beavers adding two runs and a walk. After early pitching woes from starter Dan Child, Tony Bryant tossed three-plus innings in relief, striking out four to earn his first win of the year. Pilots' star Jeff Melby struggled offensively going 0-for-4 and catcher Ben Grubb scored two of Portland's three runs while going 2-for-3 with a walk.

After the Beavers jumped out to a 4-1 lead, the pilots rallied late, scoring in the seventh and eighth innings to pull within one run, but Scott Schultz held off the Pilots' late run and picked up his ninth save on the season. With the win, Oregon State moves to 38-8 and pushes their winning streak to nine games.

The Beavers open a three-game series with Stanford in Palo Alto on Friday night while the Pilots head to San Diego to take on USD.

The next event at Volcanoes Stadum will be the OSAA State Baseball Championships on May 31 and June 1.
