May 13, 2013

Clinton, IA - The Clinton LumberKings blanked the Kane County Cougars to take the series finale, 4-0. Tyler Pike, David Holman and Oliver Garcia combined for Clinton's second shutout of the season.

LumberKings' starter Tyler Pike mowed down the Cougars' lineup for five scoreless innings, allowing just three hits. Pike's strong outing gave the LumberKings the opportunity to open up an early lead. Dario Pizzano ripped an RBI double to start the scoring. Guillermo Pimentel crushed a two-run home run, his fifth of the season, to push the lead to 3-0.

Clinton added another run in the fifth inning. An error by Cougars' shortstop David Bote kept the rally going on a misplayed grounder from Dario Pizzano. With runners on second and third, Patrick Kivlehan bounced an infield single up the middle that deflected off the glove of Pierce Johnson. The Kane County pitcher could not make the play to end the inning, allowing Tim Lopes to score and make it 4-0.

David Holman pitched three scoreless innings in relief, bouncing back from an off outing in the series opener. Oliver Garcia finished off the Cougars, stranding the bases loaded in the ninth. Cougars' catcher Yaniel Cabezas, representing the tying run, struck out to end the game.

Tyler Pike earned his second win of the season, improving to 2-3 on the year. Pierce Johnson dropped to 1-3 with the loss.

The LumberKings welcome the Beloit Snappers for a doubleheader on Tuesday evening. The LumberKings send left-hander Rusty Shellhorn (0-0, 3.00) to the mound for game one. First pitch is scheduled for 5:00 PM CT.
