Salisbury, MD - The Delmarva Shorebirds (19-22) scored one combined run in the doubleheader as the Hickory Crawdads (23-19) won game one, 4-1, and took game two, 1-0, at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium on Sunday. The Shorebirds finished the doubleheader without a hit over the final 13 combined innings.
The Shorebirds grabbed an early lead in the first inning of game one. Hickory starter CJ Edwards threw eight straight balls to walk the first two hitters. With two outs, Nik Balog singled up the middle to plate Lucas Herbst. It was the only hit of the day for the Shorebirds.
In the fourth inning, Hickory tied the game on a solo homer to right field by Joey Gallo.
The game remained tied until the seventh inning. Dennis Torres took over for Shorebirds starter Josh Hader. With two on and two outs, Lewis Brinson connected on a three-run homer to left field to give the Crawdads a 4-1 lead.
Hader lasted six innings and yielded two hits and one run. He struck out nine batters and walked three.
Crawdads starter CJ Edwards tossed a complete-game one hitter in earn the win.
In game two, the Crawdads scored the lone run in the fourth inning. Joey Gallo and Nomar Mazara recorded back-to-back singles to put runners at first and third. Then, Jordan Akins hit a grounder to short and Gallo came into score.
Four Hickory pitchers combined on a seven-inning no-hitter. Luis Parra started the game and tossed three scoreless innings. Keone Kela pitched one inning, Ryan Bores tossed two scoreless and Alexander Claudio pitched a scoreless seventh to end the game.
The Shorebirds got on base only twice in the game. Gregory Lorenzo drew a lead off walk in the first and Connor Narron walked in the sixth inning.
Shorebirds starter Brady Wager went the distance, but was pinned with the loss. He allowed just six hits and one run. Wager struck out seven and walked one.
The Shorebirds will begin a three-game series against the Lakewood BlueClaws on Monday, May 20 at 7:05pm. RHP Mark Blackmar is the scheduled starter for the Shorebirds.
