Davies outduels Augliera, Keys win 3-2

Brenden Webb launched a high fly ball down the right field line that stayed fair, cleared the fence by a few feet and gave his team a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Webb's fourth homer of the season, a two-run shot off Salem starter Mike Augliera, would be the game-winning hit Saturday night at Harry Grove Stadium, as the Frederick Keys topped the Red Sox 3-2. Frederick starter Zach Davies threw seven innings of one-run baseball to earn his fourth win of the season.

The victory improved the Keys' record to 24-22 and dropped Salem to 20-25.

Davies and Augliera, who suffered his first loss of the year, cruised through the first four innings of a game that took just two hours and eight minutes to complete. But Brandon Jacobs put an abrupt end to the scoreless stalemate in the top of the fifth, leading off the frame with a home run to left field. Davies, who had no-hit the Red Sox through four innings, then gave up three consecutive singles, loading the bases.

Davies, however, would work his way out of the jam by inducing Matt Gedman into a grounder back to the mound that he turned into a double play, forcing the runner at the plate and Gedman at first, and then striking out Sean Coyle. Travis Adair then led off the bottom of the fifth with a leadoff homer of his own, sending a line drive over the right-field fence and tying the game at 1-1.

Davies (4-2) threw seven innings, allowed five hits, walked two and struck out three in earning the win. Augliera (4-1) allowed seven hits over seven innings, walking two and fanning two.

David Walters earned his second save of the season for Frederick, pitching the eighth and the ninth. Walters allowed a single and a double to start the ninth, but only allowed Garin Cecchini to score from third, inducing three groundouts to end the game.

Frederick turned three double plays Saturday night and mustered nine hits, Zane Chavez and Christian Walker both going 2-for-4. Salem finished with eight hits and Keury De La Cruz (2-for-4) was the only member of the Red Sox to have more than one hit.

The Keys will look to win their three-game series with Salem tomorrow at 6 p.m. before heading to Winston-Salem on Monday. Eduardo Rodriguez starts for the Keys opposite Salem's Henry Owens.
