Chiefs complete sweep of Clippers
Brown keys Chiefs offense with HR, 3 RBI
05/26/2013 9:43 PM ET

Syracuse broke out the brooms as their 8-5 win over the Clippers completed a four game sweep for the Chiefs at Huntington Park.

Syracuse wasted no time getting on the scoreboard. Chiefs outfielder Corey Brown drove a single to right field. Two runs came around to score on the play as Clippers right-fielder Jeremy Hermida bobble the ball, allowing the second run to cross the plate. Carlos Rivero then cranked a two run homer over the left-center field wall, giving the Chiefs a 4-0 lead after just a half inning of play.

Despite the large deficit, Columbus would have a response in the bottom half of the first. With runners on the corners and nobody out, Cord Phelps bashed a three run shot that glanced off the right side of the scoreboard en route to Nationwide Boulevard. An inning later, Phelps hit a grounder up the middle. He would reach safely, but the throw from Syracuse shortstop Zach Walters went by first baseman Chris Marrero, allowing Chris Wallace to score from second and tie things at 4-4 after two innings in the books.

Syracuse regained the lead with a two run shot off the bat of Chris Marrero in the top of the third. Columbus made it a one run affair with a Wallace RBI sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth, but the Chiefs would get that run back with a Corey Brown solo homer that landed on the roof of the Wendy's Hamburger Balcony in right. Marrero also added an RBI single in the same inning.

From there, Columbus could not put more runs on the scoreboard as the Chiefs completed the four game sweep over the Clippers. Jeff Mandel (W, 1-1) picked up the win for Syracuse, Joe Martinez (L, 1-3) was hit with the loss for the Clippers and Tanner Roark (S, 1) tallied the save for the Chiefs.

The Clippers will hit the road as they head down south to the Bluegrass State of Kentucky for the start of a four game series with the Louisville Bats. Columbus will have Carlos Carrasco (2-0, 1.36) start on the mound. The Bats will counter with Daniel Corcino (2-7, 7.03). First pitch is scheduled for 4:05 PM.
