Redbirds double down on Zephyrs
Seven doubles lead 17-hit attack in Martinez's first AAA win
06/12/2013 10:00 PM ET

Six strong innings from starter Carlos Martinez and seven doubles propelled the Memphis Redbirds to a 9-3 rout of the New Orleans Zephyrs on Wednesday night at AutoZone Park.

The Redbirds racked up 17 hits, including seven doubles, as all eight position players in the lineup collected at least one hit.

Martinez (1-0) recorded his first career Triple-A victory, scattering seven hits while striking out five and walking none. His six innings and 91 pitches were both season highs.

Gorkys Hernandez gave New Orleans a brief 1-0 lead in the first inning when he led off with a single, stole second and scored on a Bryan Petersen single.

The Redbirds quickly answered in the bottom of the next inning with consecutive doubles from Justin Christian and Rob Johnson. Memphis moved ahead for good in the next inning as Oscar Taveras singled with one out. After Brock Peterson's double put Taveras on third, Z's starter Brian Flynn (2-6) walked the next two batters to bring home the go-ahead run. Christian followed with an RBI groundout.

Run-scoring singles from Jamie Romak and Johnson in the fifth extended the Redbirds' lead, and Kolten Wong doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Peterson in the sixth.

Hernandez hit his first home run of the season, a solo shot in the seventh, and finished with three hits.

Flynn took the loss, allowing five runs and 10 hits in 4 2/3 innings.

The Zephyrs look to snap a three-game losing skid with the series finale in Memphis at 11:05 a.m. on Thursday.
