IronBirds-Yankees Suspended
06/25/2013 10:19 PM ET

Staten Island, NY- The Aberdeen IronBirds and Staten Island Yankees rubber match this evening was suspended in the middle of the fifth inning due to a loss of power at the stadium.

The Yankees lead the game, 8-4.

The IronBirds got off to a hot start in the first inning. They sent eight batters to the plate, scoring four runs on four hits. Sam Kimmel led off the game with a single and would come in to score immediately on a Kris Richards double. Hector Veloz reached on an error. Conor Bierfeldt then hit an RBI double, scoring Richards. Before the inning was over, Veloz and Manny Hernandez would come in to score as well.

The Yankees would not wait long to respond. They scored six runs in the bottom of the second, four of which came on a Yeicok Calderon grand slam.

They added two more in the third, making the score 8-4.

As Austin Urban warmed up for his fifth inning of work, the power went out. It went out at 8:36 p.m., and turned on for a brief period about a half hour later. However, it would go out again and, after a conference with the New York Penn League office, the move was made to suspend the game.

No date has been given for a resumption of play.

The IronBirds will return home and open up a five game home stand tomorrow against the Brooklyn Cyclones. Steven Brault (0-0, 3.60) will make his second career start, and his first at home.

The Cyclone will counter with John Gant (1-0, 0.00). Gant got the start against the IronBirds last Thursday in Brooklyn, and went five innings, allowing three hits, walking two, and striking out six.

First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. at Ripken Stadium.
