Behind a solid pitching performance by Bulls hurler Jake Odorizzi, Durham defeated Columbus 3-1 at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
The Bulls were the first team to crack the scoreboard when Leslie Anderson hit a two run double in the bottom of the fourth. Jesus Flores later added to the Durham advantage in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI double down the left field line.
Durham righty Jake Odorizzi was outstanding on the mound. He struck out seven and walked one in 6 1/3 strong innings, yielding only one run on five hits to the Clippers. Columbus got on the board in the seventh with a Juan Diaz RBI double, but that would be it as the Clippers fell for the 20th time in the month of June.
Odorizzi (W, 6-1) picked up the win for Durham. Paulo Espino (L, 0-4), who gave up three runs on six hits in 5 2/3 innings, was hit with the loss for Columbus. Kirby Yates (S, 9) shut the door in the ninth for the Bulls.
Columbus and Durham will be back at it on Sunday night. The Bulls will tab lefty Mike Montgomery (4-1, 3.98) as their starter on the mound. The starter for the Clippers has yet to be determined. First pitch is scheduled for 5:05 PM.
