Salem-Keizer wins seventh straight, close in on second sweep of Hops
06/30/2013 1:27 AM ET

The Salem-Keizer Volcanoes won their seventh straight game as they topped the Hillsboro Hops 7-2 in front of 4,710 at Hillsboro Ballpark. With the win, the Volcanoes are 5-0 on the year against the Hops.

Jeremy Sy hit a three-run homerun off of Jonathan Pulley in the first to bring in Tyler Hollick and Brandon Bednar who both singled earlier in the inning. Bednar was 3-for-5 with a run scored. He now has a hit in 9 of his 10 games with the Volcanoes.

Sy led the Volcanoes offensively, going 2-for-5 with a double, a homerun, a run scored and four RBIs.

Ryan Jones singled in Geno Escalante in the second and Jonathan Jones hit in Shilo McCall in the third to make it three consecutive innings where the Volcanoes scored a run, bringing the score to 5-0.

Volcanoes starter Chris Johnson (2-1) threw six shutout innings with a season high seven strikeouts in the winning effort. He allowed only five hits and walked none.

After allowing an average of only three runs in the past 11 games, the Hops have allowed 17 runs in the past two games to the potent Volcanoes offense.

The only two runs to be allowed by the Volcanoes came in the bottom of the eighth when Jordan Parr hit a double off of Arturo Maltos-Garcia to score George Roberts and Zach Esquerra. Parr was 3-for-4 on the night with two RBIs and a stolen base.

The Volcanoes pitching staff combined for nine strikeouts and no walks, the first game of the year where the Volcanoes have not allowed a base on balls. In the past 36 innings, they have walked only 4 batters.

With the loss, the Hops fall to 4-12 and are eight games out of first place in the Northwest League South Division. The Volcanoes are now 12-4 and four games ahead of the second place Boise Hawks.

The Volcanoes have now won four of their five series on the season. In 2012, it took them until August 9 to win four series.

Salem-Keizer looks for their third sweep in 2013 on Sunday in the finale of the three-game series against the Hops at Hillsboro Ballpark. Game time is set for 1:35 p.m.
