Missions win pitchers' duel in 9th, 3-1
07/01/2013 2:37 PM ET

San Antonio, TX - With two away in the bottom of the ninth, 1B Johan Limonta came through with a two-run homer just inside the right-field pole, lifting the San Antonio Missions to the 3-1 walk-off win against the Springfield Cardinals before 3,892 fans at Wolff Stadium on Monday afternoon.

After Springfield RHP Richard Castillo and San Antonio RHP Keyvius Sampson alternated scoreless frames in the first, the Cardinals (5-7, 38-42) swung in front in the second. 1B Xavier Scruggs crushed the first pitch of the frame over the right field fence for a solo home run, lifting the Cards into the 1-0 lead.

Castillo kept the lead intact through his first four, but San Antonio (6-6, 44-37) evened it in the bottom of the fifth. LF Adam Buschini matched Scruggs's homer with one of his own, a solo shot to start the inning and square the score, 1-1.

Castillo and Sampson then kept the tie intact throughout the remainder of ther duel. Sampson ended with seven frames of work, striking out 10 and scattering only two hits, while Castillo lasted a season-high eight innings, giving up just three hits while striking out five.

San Antonio RHP Matt Branham (W, 1-0) took over for Sampson and tossed a scoreless eighth and ninth, setting the Missions up for the walk-off in the bottom of the ninth. LHP Lee Stoppelman (L, 0-1) relieved Castillo to start the frame and lost CF Rico Noel to an inning-opening walk. Stoppelman, however, retired the next two batters with Noel only advancing to third, coming one out away from extra frames. That's when 1B Johan Limonta drove a fly ball just inside the right-field foul pole, coming through with the two-run home run for the 3-1 walk-off win for San Antonio.
