Tampa, Fla. - A Tampa Yankees (5-6) comeback fell short on Wednesday night as the Flying Tigers (4-7) held on to a 3-2 win on Everyday Heroes Night at George M. Steinbrenner Field.
RHP David Herndon got the start for Tampa after being added to the roster earlier in the day. Herndon allowed two hits and one walk while striking out two in two shutout innings.
The Flying Tigers broke a scoreless tie in the third. Jared Reaves and Devon Travis reached on one-out singles off of Yankees reliever Diego Moreno. One out later, Francisco Martinez walked to load the bases. Moreno proceeded to hit Jason Krizan with a pitch to force in a run.
Moreno (1-3) allowed one run on two hits in two innings pitched. The right-hander walked one and struck out four in the loss.
Lakeland scored twice off of Tampa reliever Dietrich Enns in the fifth. Reaves and Travis singled to begin the frame. One out later, Martinez reached on an error by Dan Fiorito at third. With the bases loaded, Krizan drove in Reaves with a sacrifice fly. Jeff McVaney followed with an RBI single to give the Flying Tigers a 3-0 lead.
Tampa scored an unearned run off of Lakeland starter Kyle Ryan in the sixth. Gary Sanchez connected on a two-out double and later scored when Yeral Sanchez reached on an error by Travis at second.
Ryan (8-5) allowed the unearned run on two hits and three walks in six innings pitched. The left-hander struck out four in the win.
The Yankees inched closer by scoring off of Flying Tigers reliever Slade Smith in the seventh. Fiorito reached on a fielder's choice and moved to third on a single by Ali Castillo. With one out, Mason Williams drove in Fiorito with a groundout to second.
Smith worked a perfect eighth and Jose Valdez pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to shut down the Yankees offense in the final two innings. Valdez earned his second save of the season.
The series continues on Thursday at 5:00 p.m. at Joker Marchant Stadium. RHP Scottie Allen is scheduled to pitch for the Yankees. RHP Wilsen Palacios will take the hill for the Flying Tigers.
After wrapping up the series in Lakeland on Friday, the T-Yanks travel to Brevard County to begin a three-game road series with the Manatees. The Yankees return home on Tuesday, July 9th to play a double-header against the Dunedin Blue Jays at Steinbrenner Field at 5:00 p.m.
