Clinton, IA - The LumberKings came back once against the Burlington Bees on Friday night, but twice was not to be. After trailing 4-0 in the second inning, Clinton came back to take a 5-4 lead in the sixth inning but Burlington scored a pair in the seventh to regain a 6-5 lead, and eventual win.
Starters Reid Scoggins and Victor Sanchez each worked a scoreless first inning but ran into trouble in the second. The Bees began the second with four straight hits and scored four times in the inning. Clinton fired back as their first four reached as well.
Janelfry Zorrilla started the frame with a single and Marcus Littlewood followed with a walk. Jordy Lara rifled a 3-1 fastball into the left-center gap, scoring both to cut the lead in half at 4-2.
Gaby Guerrero was next and singled up the middle to put runners at the corners. Tim Lopes was next and brought in Lara with a sacrifice fly.
The score remained 4-3 until the LumberKings took the lead in the sixth. Again, the middle of the order did the damage. Zorrilla singled, Littlewood doubled and Lara followed with a run-scoring single. With Tim Lopes batting, a passed ball allowed Littlewood to score and give Clinton a 5-4 lead.
The lead didn't last long as Wendell Soto started the top of the seventh with a triple, breaking a 0-for-23 skid at the plate. Two batters later, Pedro Toribio tied the game with a groundout. After Toribio, Andrew Ray homered on the first pitch he saw from David Holman to put Burlington back on top.
Lara and Lopes collected eighth inning singles but Dario Pizzano hit into an inning-ending 4-6-3 double play to end the threat.
The LumberKings' home stand continues on Saturday when they host the Cedar Rapids Kernels. Clinton sends right-hander Matt Anderson (4-6, 4.20) to the mound against Cedar Rapids' right-hander Tim Atherton (4-2, 2.70). First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 PM CT. Stay-late Saturday's begin tomorrow as Down 24 plays after the game.
