Springfield, MO - The Springfield Cardinals rallied for eight runs on eight hits in the bottom of the second inning and never looked back en route to the 8-1 win against the San Antonio Missions before 6,109 fans at Hammons Field on Saturday night.

After a scoreless first frame, the Cardinals (8-8, 41-43) exploded in the bottom of the second inning against LHP Juan Oramas (L, 0-1). A strikeout started the inning, but then SS Luis Mateo sparked the onslaught with a solo home run to left-center field. 2B Vance Albitz followed with a single, before racing all the way home on an RBI double from C Audry Perez. After a strikeout to LHP Tim Cooney, LF Mike O'Neill brought in Perez with an RBI single to make it 3-0. Consecutive RBI doubles by CF James Ramsey and 3B Ruben Gotay stretched it to a 5-0 lead, before 1B Xavier Scruggs worked a walk to put two men on. RF Stephen Piscotty placed an RBI single to center field, and then a two-run double by Mateo capped the mammoth rally, further increasing the advantage to 8-0.

Cooney (W, 4-5) kept the Missions scoreless through his first four frames, but San Antonio got on the board in the top of the fifth. A lead-off single from RF Yeison Asencio started the inning, and then he worked around to third on a ground out and a wild pitch. After a strikeout dealt by Cooney, C Eddy Rodriguez knocked an RBI single to center field, scoring Asencio to make it 8-1.

Cooney, though, allowed just the one run through his 6.2 innings while striking out six. RHP Kevin Thomas picked up right where Cooney left off, striking out four batters through 1.1 scoreless innings, and then LHP Justin Wright finished it off with a scoreless ninth to close the 8-1 win for Springfield.
