NORWICH, CT --- The Lake Monsters scored seven unanswered runs, including three runs in both the fourth and sixth innings, after a four-run Connecticut second to give Vermont a 7-4 victory over the Tigers in New York-Penn League action Saturday night at Dodd Stadium.
Two Vermont errors in the second inning led to two of the four Tiger runs being unearned off Lake Monsters starter Kyle Finnegan, but Vermont scored three runs in the fourth including two-out two-run double from Boog Powell. The Lake Monsters tied the game in the fifth when Jaycob Brugman scored from third on a two-out passed ball by catcher Duncan McAlpine.
Vermont took the lead in the sixth as Powell and Wilfredo Solano led off the inning with back-to-back singles followed by a ground-rule double from Brugman to rightcenter scoring Powell with the go ahead run. The Lake Monsters added two more runs in the inning on a Chad Pinder sacrifice fly and a Luis Baez RBI single scoring Brugman for the 7-4 lead.
Reliever Lee Sosa came on in relief of Finnegan to start the fourth inning and allowed just one hit with one walk and one strikeout over three scoreless innings to earn the victory. Derek Hansen also gave up one hit and struckout three in two scoreless innings, while Trevor Bayless tossed a scoreless ninth for his second save of the season.
Powell was 3-for-5, while Brugman, Pinder and Tyler Marincov each had a pair of hits as Vermont collected 13 hits and six walks on the night. It was the largest come-from-behind win for the Lake Monsters since rallying from a 5-0 deficit for an 11-7 victory over the Tri-City ValleyCats on September 4, 2011.
Vermont returns home to historic Centennial Field for a three-game series against the Hudson Valley Renegades Sunday through Tuesday. Series begins Sunday at 5:05 pm and the first 500 adults (18 and older) will play to win a free $1,000 Gift Card to the Vermont Mattress Depot, while fans can play catch in the outfield post-game as part of "Have A Catch Sunday".
