Rubber Match Goes to Aberdeen, 8-2 in Extras
07/09/2013 2:04 PM ET

Troy, NY- For the third straight game, the IronBirds fell behind. Unlike last night's 12 inning loss, the Aberdeen IronBirds bombarded the Tri-City ValleyCats with six runs in the top of the tenth inning to earn the series win, 8-2.

The ValleyCats put two on the board in the fourth inning when Michael Martinez homered off of IronBirds' starter Janser Severino. It would be the only two runs Severino, and the IronBirds bullpen, would allow today.

Aberdeen tied it in the seventh. Kris Richards led off with a walk. He advanced to second on an Anthony Vega single. Jeff Kemp then singled to load the bases. Sott Kalush and Jared Breen hit back-to-back sacrifice flies to tie the game at two.

The ValleyCats threatened in the ninth, but a strike out and caught stealing sent this game to extras.

The tenth inning was when the Aberdeen bats came alive. With two outs, Conor Bierfeldt hit an RBI single, scoring Yastrzemski. After an intentional walk to Manny Hernandez, Richards hit an RBI single of his own. Vega then greeted new Tri-City pitcher Pat Christensen with a three run home run that landed in the IronBirds' bullpen in right field, making it 7-2 Aberdeen. After a Jeff Kemp single, his third of the game, Kalush came through with another RBI giving the IronBirds their final run of the day, and making it 8-2.

Mark Appel got the start for the ValleyCats. In three innings, he allowed three hits, striking out five. Janser Severino got the start for Aberdeen. He went five innings, allowing three hits, two runs, one walk and six strikeouts.

David Richardson got the win, improving to 2-1 on the season. Kevin Comer took the loss for Tri-City, falling to 2-2.

The IronBirds return home tomorrow and open up a six game home stand with the first of three with the State College Spikes, affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals. First pitch is 7:05 p.m.
