Early Lead Holds Up For Captains in 5-3 Win

(Eastlake, OH) - The Captains (14-14) scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning which propelled them to a 5-3 win over the Quad Cities River Bandits (15-12) on Saturday Night. In the opening frame, Dorssys Paulino hit a solo homerun to right field to open the scoring. Joe Sever and Erik Gonzalez hit back-to-back doubles to add another run and the Richard Stock hit his fourth homerun of the season to deep right field and the score was 4-0 Captains. The win snapped a four game losing skid for Lake County.

The Captains added a run in the fourth inning. With the bases loaded, Joe Sever hit an infield single and that plated Todd Hankins and Lake County led the game 5-0.

Quad Cities got on the board in the top of the sixth inning when Teoscar Hernandez hit his seventh homer of the season to right field and the score was 5-1. Luis Alvarez hit his second homer of the season to left field in the top of the seventh and the score was 5-2.

In the ninth inning, Quad Cities got one back. Jordan Scott and Jesse Wierzbicki walked and then Rio Ruiz singled home Scott and the score was 5-3. That was the final score.

LHP Ryan Merritt (6-9) started the game for Lake County and earned the win. Merritt allowed two earned runs on six hits. Merritt walked one and struck out two. Grant Sides pitched two innings and allowed just one run on one hit with two walks and two strikeouts. Sides earned his first save of the season for the Captains.

Quad Cities sent RHP Chris Devenski (0-2) to the mound to start the game. Devenski lasted four innings and allowed nine hits. Devenski yielded five earned runs, one walk, one hit batter and seven strikeouts. Devenski took the loss. Juri Perez pitched four innings of relief for the River Bandits and allowed two hits and two walks. He struck out two in his scoreless outing.

Sunday is a special 7 PM start and is a Family Fun Sunday, presented by the Lake County YMCA, featuring a pre-game player autograph session, concourse entertainment and activities, the Kids' Zone area and the opportunity for kids to run the bases after the game. All kids in attendance will receive a Captains activities book and crayons, presented by the YMCA and Lake County Job and Family Services.

The Captains annual Pre-Game Mass will be on Sunday as part of another Faith Night presented by 95.5 the FISH.  Pro Football Hall of Fame Wide Receiver Paul Warfield will be in attendance and will sign autographs prior to the game for fans on the concourse. He will be recognized on the field during pre-game ceremonies when he will throw out a ceremonial first pitch. Following the post-game fireworks show, Warfield will give a talk and answer questions for fans in attendance.

Sunday will feature the first of two Fireworks Sunday Nights presented by Drug Mart. Fans will be treated to a post-game fireworks extravaganza on this night as well as Sunday, August 4. The first 1,500 fans in attendance on Sunday will receive a Captains Alternate Logo Wall Decal presented by Bod Shotz by Bruce and Bruce Custom Graphics.

The Quad Cities River Bandits remain in Eastlake, Ohio on Sunday Night. In game two of a three game series, the Captains will start RHP Robbie Aviles (3-3, 4.26) and Quad Cities will counter with LHP Joe Bircher (1-0, 2.60). First Pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM from Classic Park.
