Bees Sting Silverhawks 10-3
07/22/2013 10:39 PM ET

Sherman Johnson fell a home run shy of the cycle and Burlington got home runs from Exicardo Cayones, Sandy Martinez and Wade Hinkle to beat South Bend 10-3 on Monday evening at Community Field.

After falling in the first two games of the series against the South Bend Silverhawks, the Burlington Bees (38-57, 12-18) brought their power bats and their solid arms to play on Monday.

The Bees scored an unearned run in the first off Jesse Darrah (9-6) to take an early 1-0. Johnson's fly ball was dropped by Breland Almadova, allowing Johnson to get all the way to third base. Michael Bolaski came through with a two-out single to put Burlington ahead.

Johnson doubled home Pedro Toribio to put the Bees ahead 2-0 in the second. Johnson had a spectacular day, going 3-for-4 with two runs and three RBIs. He fell a home run shy of the cycle, picking up a RBI double in the second, a RBI triple in the fourth and a RBI single in the fifth.

Reid Scoggins drew the start for Burlington and held the Silverhawks (62-38, 18-13) to two runs, one earned in four innings. Scoggins struck out five batters, but had to leave because of a high pitch count. Joey Krehbiel (4-5) tossed three perfect innings in relief to pick up the victory.

South Bend tied the game at two in the fourth on a two-run home run by Alex Glenn. However, the Bees came right back in the bottom of the inning to score two of their own. Cayones belted his second home run of the homestand, while Johnson tripled home Riley Good.

The Bees put the game away in the fifth thanks to Wade Hinkle's ninth long ball of the season and Sandy Martinez's two-run shot, which was his first professional home run.

Burlington will try and carry this momentum into its final series of the homestand. The Quad Cities River Bandits will take on the Bees for three games beginning on Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m. Houston Astros 1st-round supplemental pick, Lance McCullers, will take on Pat Lowery.

On Thursday, the 2013 1st overall pick, Mark Appel, will start for Quad Cities against Tyler DeLoach. Get your tickets now by calling the box office at 319-754-5705.
