Bounce Back Effort Falls Short
Carolina's Bats Too Much As Keys Fall 9-5
08/02/2013 12:13 AM ET

The Keys dropped its series opener 9-5 at Carolina after bouncing back from an early 2-0 hole. Frederick scored three fifth inning runs but saw their lead whittle away in the series opening defeat.

Down 2-0, Frederick got an infield single from CF Glynn Davis, and a double to left-center from 3B Jason Esposito. LF Tucker Nathans then drove a ball to the wall in center field for a double to tie the game at 2-apiece. Nathans then scored when RF Johnny Ruettiger doubled him home with two down.

The lead fell to the wayside in the sixth inning. Reliever Matt Hobgood walked two batters and hit one to load the bases with no outs. With the tying run in on a groundout, Mudcats RF Bo Greenwell tripled home two runs. He then scored on a wild pitch. Four runs had scored with just one hit and the Mudcats led 6-3.

Carolina would plate three runs on four hits in the seventh inning. The Mudcats in the game had two men on with no outs six times in eight innings. Nathans, for Frederick, went 2-for-4 with three RBI's. Also, before the game, the Orioles announced the signing of Dariel Alvarez, a 24-year old Cuban outfielder. He was assigned to the Frederick roster but is on the temporarily inactive list.

The Keys continue its series at Carolina with LHP Tim Berry on the hill Friday, August 2nd at 7:15 p.m. Coverage begins 30-minutes prior with the Frederick Gorilla Pre-Game Show on 1450-AM The Source.
